Question:

Can I use my browser like Internet Explorer to access the JPEG2000 DVR though the Internet? Will I have to install special software? Some surveillance systems seem to not require special software like the JPEG2000 DVR. Why?

Answer:

Hi there,

there is software to be installed with ANY surveillance systems if you are going to access it through the Internet.

There are no DVR systems on the market that we know of that are Internet accessible that do not require you to install software.

Some people get confused and think that because they are accessing the system through their browser like Internet Explorer that there is no software to install... This is not the case.

Some systems come with remote viewing software that you actually install as a program like the one that you asked about, the Remote Viewer for the JPEG2000 DVMR. Others systems you access using your browser like Internet Explorer.

Either way you are installing software. The ones that use Internet Explorer require you to install Active-X files from the DVR before you can login using your browser. This is just another method of installing software. This installation is done behind the browser so it's not as obvious as actually running an installation program.

Microsoft Windows security will usually block this type of software the first time you try to access the DVR using this method because there are security implications that go along with using your browser to install software. The two main reasons that Microsoft Windows will block this type of DVR software are because these DVR's require you to install Active-X and most DVR manufacturers don't have the money to Pay Microsoft to become a "Known Publisher" resulting in a "Unknown Publisher" error message. An example of getting around this error from Microsoft Windows can be seen at http://www.jpeg2000support.com/email_faq/activex-problem/.

The DVR that we are selling that you asked about, the JPEG2000 DVMR works both ways. You can install the software that is shipped with the DVR or you can access it with your browser. Just like all the other DVR's in the market that we know of you will have to use the Acitve-X fix before the software can be installed.

So, as you can see there are no DVR's that don't require software to be installed. There are just different ways of installing the software. One is just more secure then the other.

If your interested in getting a demonstration of the two ways that I just spoke of send a email to support@jpeg2000support.com and ask about the demo. We will provide instructions on using both methods so that you can better understand what we are talking about.

Let me know if this information answered your question or if you think I misunderstood your question and I will try again.

We strongly recommend that you check the demos of using both methods. You will be extremely impressed with the quality of the video from the JPEG2000 DVR. These DVR systems use the JPEG2000 compression, which delivers the highest quality recorded video images on the market today. Better then the new H.264 and much, much better the MJPEG-4, which is what everyone is selling these day and is very disappointing.

We don't just say this to sell the JPEG2000 product. We encourage you to contact sellers of to try their DEMO so that you will know first hand from experience what your getting into before buying a DVR system. If a seller doesn't have a DEMO then you should consider buying from another source.

Your making an investment when you purchase a surveillance system so you owe it to yourself to do your homework before buying.

Thanks,
